Historic Meets Modern: How Lights Can Be the Bridge (Our Partnership with LightsOnline)

I don’t know about you, but when I think about the lighting in traditional historic homes, I either picture grande, picturesque chandeliers, or weird, dusty travesties that haunt the underbelly of Craigslist and flea markets alike. It’s a fine balance – introducing modern fixtures to a historic home – while maintaining the original character and charm of the home.

When we first began our renovations, we recognized the importance of celebrating their roots. All too often, the charm and original elements are stripped from a home, only to be replaced with fixtures that don’t compliment the historic home’s features and “feel.” We knew that we wanted to bring modern, updated elements to our Victorian ladies, while keeping as many historic elements as possible. What a better way to achieve this than introducing beautiful, functional lighting fixtures that brought out our personal style?

That said, the lighting options that grace the internet are simply… overwhelming. With all these choices, what’s a gal to do!?

Enter LightsOnline. With their help, we found the perfect lighting schemes for our historic home renovations (if we do say so ourselves.)

Note: the items included in this post were gifted to Momstrosity. However, all opinions are strictly our own– we’d never steer you wrong!

SCONCES

If you know us, you know we love a good sconce. They add dimension to any room – whether by a bed, along a stairwell, or as additional lighting in a bathroom – you’ll never regret a well-placed sconce.

Both of our homes have an abundance of stairs, and knew right off the bat that we wanted to line our stairwells with sconces– for both function (to keep the staircases well-lit) and to draw the eye.

We wanted to choose a finish that repeats throughout the home to keep things cohesive, and a design that was elegant but not fussy. Incidentally, we both chose warm brass for our finishes

Where, you ask, might a sconce be used?

BY THE BED—

IN THE BATHROOM—

ALONG A STAIRWELL—

Pro tip: we recommend installing stairwell sconces after move-in so that furniture and boxes don’t get hung up on them.

STATEMENT PIECES

Looking to “light up” a room in more ways than one? Add a statement fixture. From chandeliers to pendants, statement pieces can add so much to a space– serving as a secondary light source to your run-of-the-mill can light.

Stephanie chose two stunning globes to line her home’s main hallway. I can’t get over how well they match her style and enhance the overall aesthetic of the home.

She also chose a massive chandelier to hang in open stairwell, and it adds the perfect touch of drama to the space.

FLUSHMOUNTS

Looking for an alternative to traditional can lights, but don’t have the height for a pendant or chandelier? Flushmounts are the perfect solution. If you know us, you know that we loathe a boob light– which is where flushmounts come in. LightsOnline has a great flushmount selection - from flush to semi-flush, simple to unique– we were really impressed with our options.

In the end, we (unknowingly) chose the same ones, perfect for vestibules that needed a bit of brightening. We love them!

EXTERIOR FIXTURES

Nothing says “curb appeal” more than a well-placed lantern, amiright? For all of our exterior doors, we added these beautiful lanterns.

Stephanie knew that her front porch would be best-enjoyed with a few ceiling fans (Georgia is HOT, y’all!) and I love what she chose. They perfectly complement the haint blue ceiling!

We’d love to hear your thoughts about what we chose, and answer any questions you may have about marrying historic and modern.

Thanks again to LightsOnline for being a wonderful partner and light source! We can’t recommend them highly enough.
